Mission Canyon is a tranquil and beautiful piece of Santa Barbara and is known for being the home of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden as well as its crowning landmark, the historic Mission of Santa Barbara. Residents have easy access to the wonderful Mission rose gardens and expansive lawns, where views of red tile roofs and the ocean complete the idyllic setting. While most of the neighborhood is located in the foothills of Santa Barbara, such as the micro neighborhood of Mission Canyon Heights, there are a select number of homes and larger estates positioned between the Mission and the base of the foothills. Expect to pay a premium for these homes as they offer larger, more usable lots than their hillside neighbors.
Parks and Recreation in Mission Canyon
The summit above Mission Canyon is La Cumbre Peak, the highest point of the local mountain ranges, and is accessible by trails originating in the canyon. Several parks are also situated below in the canyon, such as the popular Rocky Nook Park. Just opposite Rocky Nook is the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, a long-time attraction and learning place for families, students, enthusiasts, and scientists. The neighborhood also offers the Santa Barbara Women’s Club and Santa Barbara Tennis Club.
Mission Canyon Homes for Sale
Most homes in the area fall into two categories: those that are tucked into the mountainside, producing fantastic views from their two- to four-story designs, and those that take advantage of peaceful and natural canyon lots, surrounded by mature trees and years of natural landscaping. With just under 3,000 residents and many multi-million dollar residences, the volume of home sales for the Mission Canyon area is fairly low compared to other neighborhoods in Santa Barbara. In the past two years, homes in Mission Canyon have sold anywhere from $500,000 to over $3 million.
Highway 192 (Foothill and Sycamore Canyon Roads) runs through Mission Canyon, and is the secondary option for those wishing to avoid the freeway between Goleta and Carpinteria—or simply desiring a scenic drive to Montecito and Carpinteria beyond. Still, Mission Canyon is close to all the offerings of State Street and the downtown Santa Barbara area.
