The unincorporated Orcutt is named after the late William Warren Orcutt, a pioneer of oil and credited with the first major discovery of oil in California. With a current population of roughly 30,000, Orcutt has grown into an affordable city in an expensive location. Because of the recent growth in the Orcutt area, homes tend to be relatively new, and yet more affordable than real estate in south Santa Barbara County.

Located just south of Santa Maria at the bottom of the Santa Maria Valley, Orcutt is about 165 miles north of Los Angeles and 270 miles south of San Francisco.
